This listing is for a later 1800’s vintage food, meat or vegetable chopper or hasher built by the L. Starrett Company of Athol Massachusets. As you can see in a couple of the photos of this listing, the letters cast on one end of the walking beam say No. Starrett’s” and the letters on the opposite end say “Patent May 23, 1865. This was the first product manufactured by the L. They later did and still do produce some of the finest, most respected and sought after measuring tools in the world. This very interesting item is still in very good original condition for at item that is nearly 150 years old. Unfortunately, it is missing the hand crank, food dicer assembly and the metal food bowl. Fortunately, it does still have the spring loaded removable pin that held the top of the dicer to the end of the walking beam. That very hard to find part is shown by the green pen in the next to last photo. The last photo if from the internet and shows a complete machine like this. This photo is for reference only to give you some idea what the metal food bowl and dicer looks like. The missing hand crank is used to turn the shaft that has the large gear on the other end. That gear meshes with the smaller gear on the shaft that has the flywheel on the other end. This mechanism provides step up gearing to make the dicer move up and down about 4 times for every complete turn of the missing crank handle. The oscillating movement of the walking beam along the top of this machine makes it resemble an oil well to some people. I may add more information soon.
