Here we have an’ultra-RARE’ Antique 1895 Patented “AUTO” RECIPROCATING HAND DRILL by Best Tool Company, Boston MA. This tool was produced under a patent originally granted to Henrick Julius Hjorth of Boston, Massachusetts on June 11, 1895. The drill is stamped on the nickle-plated, spring loaded cylinder: AUTO HANDLE DRILL PATD JUN 11 95 BEST TOOL CO. MASS PAT APPLD FOR. It is in working condition and retains nearly 90% of its original finishes. It has its original leather pull cord with attached handle. Caution : new owner should not yank on the cord for fear that the leather may break due to its age. A slow pull indicates that it is in full working order. It comes with a 3/8 3-Jaw Chuck. Both the wood ball’pull’ and the nicely turned top handle appear to be Beech, but I’m not positive of this. There are no cracks in the wood or in any part of this drill.
