Early Swinden’s vice in superb condition. It has been stripped and cleaned with no repairs either found or needed. Lettering is amazingly crisp showing it has at least been cared for and not left to rot. The main screw is in very good condition and the vice moves in and out smoothly. The rotation is also super smooth, moves easily and locks up solidly. I have made up a simple back cap which was missing and a set of aluminium soft jaws for the four inch secondary jaws. Please note this is a FIVE inch model, much larger than a regular Swinden’s vice. I enclose a couple of pictures for reference. The little thing hiding behind it in one of the pictures is a full size Record engineering bench vice, the other picture shows it next to my regular workhorse Swinden’s. If you have never used a Swinden’s patent rotating vice you might not realise what all the fuss is about. They are superb devices and once you have used one, you never want to be without. They are super strong being made from cast steel (hence the occasional casting flaw) and incredibly versatile.
