SET ANTIQUE DISSTON No. 12 CC & RIP SAWS Freshly Hand Sharpened
SET ANTIQUE DISSTON No. 12 CC & RIP SAWS Freshly Hand Sharpened. Here are two quality freshly sharpened Disston No. 12 handsaws made in the early 1900s. You do not see No. 12 saws in this size and ready to use condition often I know as a saw collector and restorer I find it near impossible to find these No. 12 model saws any more in the wild. Both are Disston No. 12 saws the model that Disston set the standard with as the finest saws made. These are not your common No. 12 saws as they are from the early 1900s and crisp with handsome dark carved applewood handles. The crosscut is a 8ppi pitch made for work on cabinet grade kiln dried woods. The rip saw is a large 5-1/2ppi rip saw in spectacular condition. There are a lot of good saws but these Disston No. 12 saws are some of the best user quality saws. What made the No. 12 saw more expensive and higher in quality was the work that went into it. The blade was subjected to more hammer work than lesser-quality saws to give tension to the steel. The controlled introduction of internal stresses into the cold steel through hammering and subsequent tempering, resulting in a “tensioned” saw blade, creates a blade that is less likely to wander or vibrate unnecessarily in use. An added result of this tensioning is a blade that has a characteristic ringing or “singing” sound when tapped. This saw rings like a bell. Another feature of the No. 12 handsaw is the extra taper in the blade. In order to reduce the amount of set required on the teeth, the No. 12 was ground thinner at the back than other models. Disston claimed the steel was harder in the No. 12 saw, which would enable the saw plate to be ground thinner while still remaining stiff enough stand up to mild abuse. The first saw I will describe is the rip saw. A 26 rip saw with 5-1/2 ppi pitch. The stunning apple wood handle is perfect with long flowing horns and the deep carved vines. The saw plate is a wide 7-1/2 width at the heel. The saw plate is clean with an aged dark polish and straight. The etch is clear and readable and a delicate full nib up front. I meticulously fine-tuned this saw to perfection hand filing each tooth to get the perfect angles and size for each tooth. First jointing the teeth so the tooth line is perfectly straight with all the teeth doing an equal share of work when sawing. I filed a 5% rake which is a fine rake angle allowing smooth sawing action with plenty of aggressiveness of cut. This 5-1/2ppi pitch is perfectly suited for seasoned hardwoods and is a fast sawing saw easily following a straight line with no effort. Especially in harder woods or for woodworkers who dont use handsaws every day, this is a great saw. It has a plate thickness of. 037 just above the tooth line and. 028 up top so very little set was needed. It cuts fast and smooth in both hardwoods and softwoods. A good saw for use on a saw horse for ripping to width it is a fast aggressive sawing saw. Also is a Disston 26 No. Like the rip saw this is a good sized crosscut saw with 6-1/2 width at the heel. It is a perfectly straight and clean polished saw plate with a full nib up front. This saw and the rip saw are straight back saws giving that little extra rigidity to the saw plate. It is a fast smooth cutting 8ppi pitch sharpened with a 15 degree rake and 20 degree fleam for fast cutting and strong tooth structure. It has a thickness just above the tooth line of. 037 and up top it is. 028 so very little set was needed for smooth sawing. Good for quick smooth sawing of both hardwoods and softwoods. The apple wood handle is in fine condition with the original finish. The long flowing horns on the handle are in fine condition with a comfortable grip for my large hands – it offers balanced control with smooth fast aggressive working motion. These saws are perfect for the shop worker who needs a good set of saws for hand dimensioning of lumber on saw horses, before your bench work. These are saws that will last a lifetime and be handed down to your next generation. I have collected handsaws for over 25 years and have enjoyed learning the history of this industry. I have always worked with hand tools and was fortunate to teach woodworking for 30 years after my six years in the military. It was during this time that I realized the best way to get quality tools for my students was to recondition vintage tools. Those kids knew how to dull a saw and often I had to keep them after school for an hour when I saw them abusing a saw. That way they came to realize what I went thru to get a saw in perfect working order. This consists of jointing the saw to get it straight, shaping and sharpening, re-jointing and re-sharpening, gently setting the teeth to get a smooth sawing action in the kerf, then final sharpening. Finally I lightly hone the side edge with a fine stone and polish the blade- before testing the smoothness of the cut. AFTER THE SALE PLEASE CONTACT ME WITH ANY QUESTIONS AS I WILL ALWAYS STRIVE TO KEEP MY CUSTOMERS FULLY SATISFIED. I was President of CRAFTS for over 10 years. I know antique hand tools and use them in my shop every day. I use many pictures as they are worth a thousand words and count on them as part of my description.
