However you feel about it’s looks, a’PHILA’ era Disston D-95 Masterpiece in its original display case is a once in a lifetime find. I’ve been into saws for as long as i can remember and it’s certainly the only boxed pre war saw i’ve ever seen. Disston released these saws in 1939, they were trying out new ideas, playing with new designs and meterials and generally mixing it up a bit. Their traditional recipe of a’let-in’ handle on a taper ground spring steel saw plate was a winner and honestly couldnt be improved upon so what were they to do but experiment? The D95 was the result of that experimentation. For a start the taper grinding is more pronounced, with a greater difference in thickness between toothline and spine thickness, the’let in’ handle was now mounted lower bringing the hand closer to the teeth and allowing a more direct transfer of force to the cut. The steel itsself was of Disston’s usual incredible quality. And then there’s the handle…… Whether you love it or hate it, it was certainly a bold move on Disston’s part. Bearing in mind that at the time, plastics were new. There was Bakelite but that was about it as far as it’s usage in consumer goods went, So imagine how impressed you’d have been when the Disston rep showed you their incredible new “unbreakable” material,’Disstonite’! Everybody has at least one saw with a broken wooden handle, This promised to be the answer to that problem. They offered it in 3 colour combinations, brown and green, brown and orange or the god awful’Onyx and red’ it wouldn’t be so bad without the red would it, what were they thinking??? I dunno, perhaps some people like it, perhaps in 1939 it was bang on trend. Personally i think it looks like the unfortunate result of a collision between a frog and a car but it dosen’t detract from the fact that this is a very important part of Disston’s history. To find a pre war D95 is rare, To find one with a visiable etch and in good condition is very rare, To find one in good condition and with the squashed frog coloursheme is incredibly rare and to find one in it’s original presentation case is unheard of. I’ve been as honest as i can with the photos of this saw. It isn’t perfect but it isn’t far off. The corrosion on the plate is very light and looks far worse than it is in real life. The box is missing one end of the top half and has been repaired with gummed tape at the other end, the bottom half which makes up the display frame is in much better shape, it even has its display stand on the back. Don’t hesitate to message me if you have any questions. The saw will be oiled and wrapped in VCI paper prior to packaging to prevent corrosion. An opened and well looked after bronze No4 smoothing plane by world class tool makers Lie-Nielsen of the USA. Complete with all instructions and original packaging, it has been used but always well maintained. The bronze has dulled down a bit along with the lovely cherry handles.
