Welcome to Vintage Tools Melbourne! Antique hand tools – PREMIUM QUALITY saw #283. Up for sale is a Premium Quality ATKINS Model 53 8PPI CROSSCUT Panel SAW, freshly hand sharpened & set. The Atkins No:53 was a high end model with an embossed applewood Atkins perfection handle, a Silver Steel blade (a high grade of steel that holds its edge well, usually used for making straight razors) & Nickel Plated Brass fittings. The saw plate is made from Atkins Silver Steel & is nicely taper ground & freshly hand sharpened to 15° of rake & 25° of fleam, the handle is apple, the saw plate is a smaller 24 / 610mm long, it dates to around the 1910-20s. This saw is for the woodworker that is happy to work unplugged, you’ll know what I mean when you read this, it’s like fast food vs slow food, it’s getting back to the heart of woodworking & using your hands, not flicking a switch. Antique hand tools – PREMIUM QUALITY saw #299. Up for sale is a legendary Premium Quality Henry Disston & (singular) Son No:9 RIP SAW that dates to 1865 – 1871, freshly hand sharpened & set. The saw plate is made from Extra Cast Steel London Spring Steel & it has a CRISP applewood double looped handle that just fits your hand like a glove, these were one of Henry’s Premium Model Saws- the absolute best of its kind. This saw has a “Henry Disston & Son” etch & a “Henry Disston” inset eagle medallion, most likely closer to the earlier range of production. A full 28 / 710mm plate, hand sharpened to the factory 4.5PPI graduated rip profile. This saw has been hand sharpened to 5° of rake. It’s in amazingly good condition for a 150 year old saw- full bright plate & a crisp double loop handle- there aren’t too many around in this condition. This saw is for the woodworker that is happy to work unplugged, you’ll know what I mean when you read this, it’s like fast food vs slow food, it’s getting back to the heart of woodworking & using your hands, not flicking a switch. Please note any blue colour you can see on the tooth line is engineers set out fluid- my saw Dr uses it to keep track of where he’s filed- if you’ve ever sharpened a saw that will make sense to you. Size – 82cm overall. This saw is in authentic vintage condition, freshly hand sharpened & set, there is a full bold etch, some isolated spots of pitting to the plate & missing 1/2 a tooth back from the toe- doesn’t affect use & will reappear next sharpen or so, the handle is in extra good condition with the bottom horn shortened slightly & some tight checks to the top horn, the plate is full & still sports the factory heel PPI stamp- rare in a saw of this age. It’s a very usable fast cutting rip saw, ready to go to work in the discerning workshop, these are an uncommon saw & this one is EXTRA TIDY. Antique hand tools – PREMIUM QUALITY tenon saw #216. Up for sale is a gorgeous Premium Quality ROBERT SORBY 16 Brass Backed Rip TENON SAW. This saw is 16 / 406mm long plate & a rip profile of 11PPI, 82mm deep at the toe & 88mm at the heel, it’s been hand sharpened with 5° rake. Robert Sorby & Sons were making saws in Sheffield from 1833 until 1971, judging by the die stamps on the spine & the style of medallion, this tenon saw most likely dates to around 1870, the heavy folded brass back tapers from 27mm wide at the handle down to 23mm at the toe. This saw is for the woodworker that is happy to work unplugged, you’ll know what I mean when you read this, it’s like fast food vs slow food, it’s getting back to the heart of woodworking & using your hands, not flicking a switch. Overall length – 53cm. The saw plate is made from Disstons Spring Steel & it has an absolutely gorgeous applewood “lambs tongue” handle that just fits your hand like a glove, this saw has the rare inset medallion with the reversed patent date stamp- December 27.1887, it’s just absolutely superb. 24.5 / 620mm plate, 10PPI cross cut profile. This saw has been hand sharpened to 15 degrees of rake, 25 degrees of fleam as per Disstons standard cross cut angles. Antique hand tools – Premium Quality saw #208. Up for sale is an amazing scarce & genuine GROVES & SONS cabinetmakers RIP SAW in original. Condition- unbelievably this saw is near full width & has the rear factory flat. A full sized 26 / 665mm rip saw, it’s freshly hand sharpened to 5° of rake & is an original 7PPI fine cabinetmakers rip saw, it has the original breasted toothline. This saw is incredible, it’s a time capsule saw, it’s in the same condition as if it’s been sitting on the shelf in a hardware shop since 1830, 186 years ago. The high polish from the tradesmen blocking the blade is still visible, the plate is highly taper ground & the handle is a work of art, the edges are crisp, this is a museum quality saw, but boy does it cut wood well, the blade has a deep baritone ring when cutting, it’s just superb. The blade has its original rounded nose & nib, Groves & Sons is stamped very high up on the blade & is flanked with 3 X crowns. Richard Groves & Sons are one of the legendary saw making firms from Sheffield, their saws were of the highest quality & they were one of the oldest established firms with a starting date of 1787 & they continued in one form or another until the 1920s. Looking at the style & blade stamp on this saw it dates to the 1830s, nearly unbelievable due to the extra good condition of this saw. This saw is for the woodworker that is happy to work unplugged, you’ll know what I mean when you read this, it’s like fast food vs slow food, it’s getting back to the heart of woodworking & using your hands, not flicking a switch. Overall length – 77cm. This saw is in authentic vintage condition, wear and tear consistent with age and use, it’s sharp & straight, the plate has some grease stains from storage & spots of pitting, the handle is perfect apart from a tight chip on the tip of the top horn, the edges are totally crisp- very very rare on a 186 year old saw, it’s a time capsule saw that feels good in the hand, ready to go to its new home with the serious early English saw connoisseur, you will not find another this good & I don’t say that lightly.
