Here is a fine set of saws for the woodworker who desires the finest tools. These are large full width saws, both 26 long, for rough work and fast dimensioning of wood in your shop before you do the precision work. Both saws are in great user condition and tuned-up ready for work. These saws are of fine quality and are freshly restored yet not over-cleaned, as I believe in leaving the aged patina and soul with the saw for the new owner to treasure. They have their original finish on the superb apple wood handles and saw plates lightly cleaned by hand not over polished and shiny. These saws are from the early 1900s made by Disston & Sons in Philadelphia. They are made with the finest spring steel Disston made and will perform superbly and last you a lifetime of woodworking. The large Disston D-8 crosscut saw from around WW1 Vintage, is a 26 clean hand-sharpened 9ppi. It is straight and clean, and a smooth, fast sawing saw, with 7-1/4 width at the heel. A large full width saw. Freshly hand sharpened with a 15 degree rake and a 25 degree fleam, a good average setup that produces a strong tooth that will cut easily with all woods. It has a good strong thickness at the teeth of. 029 up higher at the skew back, so it has a healthy tapered ground to allow less set with the teeth. It has been tested and saws smoothly in soft pine and hard oak leaving a smooth straight cut. It is a skew-back saw with a cover top handle that has been cleaned and lightly restored. The handle is a beautifully grained apple wood, with full horns and an ergonomic handle that is very comfortable in the hand even for large hands. It has a fine balanced hang with the deep set-in saw plate. The long horns lock in your hand for a comfortable balanced grip. It has a clean hand polished saw plate and a light etch. No rust or pitting, it has a clean factory polished saw plate and a clear readable etch and Disston quote of quality. All work was carefully hand done and care was taken to leave the personality of the saw intact for the next user in this saws lifetime. It is a wide 26 – D-8 thumb-hole rip saw that is straight and clean with an aggressive 5 ppi pitch , and 7-1/4 width at the heel. This is a large wide saw. The perfect apple wood handle is a golden honey color with handsome swirls in the grain and full length horns and a hand rubbed original finish. It has the early style thumb hole with the deep cutout carving that is just so comfortable to use and looks great as well. It is a skew back saw with a cover top handle that is set-in low for a fine balanced feel. That with the 5 saw screws; lock in the saw blade tightly. It is a comfortable form fitting handle locking in your hand with long flowing horns top and bottom offering good control when sawing. The thumb hole allows the left hand to join in on the action for long heavy ripping. Hand sharpened and ready to use, it is a saw with smooth – straight very fast sawing action. I meticulously fine-tuned this saw to perfection first jointing the tooth line and hand filing each tooth to get the perfect angles and size of each tooth. I filed a 4% rake which is a fine rake angle allowing smooth sawing action with aggressiveness of cut. Especially in harder woods or woodworkers who dont use handsaws every day this is a great compromise angle. The saw has a good strong thickness at the teeth of. 026 up higher at the skew back so it has a tapered ground to allow less set with the teeth. I did fine tune the set so it cuts smoothly in kiln dried hardwoods yet a little more set so it also works smoothly in softer woods. I tested this out with the softer Philippine mahogany as well as some harder oak wood, and it cuts fast and smooth. It has a clean saw plate with an aged grayish color plate not over-cleaned and shiny as it was left unbuffed to reflect its age. The clean saw plate has absolutely no rust or pitting and a light readable etch and Disston quote of quality. If you have been looking for a good set of D-8 saws, these fit the bill. These saws would be perfect for the woodworker who works with hand tools and who needs a good set of saws for hand dimensioning of lumber on saw horses, before your bench work or for rough timber frame out in the field. These are saws that will last a lifetime and be handed down to your next generation. I have collected handsaws for over 25 years and have enjoyed learning the history of this industry. I have always worked with hand tools and was fortunate to teach woodworking for 30 years after my six years in the military. SPECTACULAR DISSTON 20 – No. 12 PANEL CC SAW Freshly Hand Sharpened. This is an exceptional vintage Disston No 12 – 20 handsaw in fine ready to use condition. It is considered one of the highest quality saws Disston ever made the No. 12 saw with EXTRA REFINED – LONDON SPRING STEEL. It is a fine 10ppi crosscut and freshly hand sharpened by me. A very fine tooth per inch for kiln dried cabinet grade wood having a thin kerf and smooth finish on cut. It is a clean saw with the original mirror quality polish and a full nib up front. Thus telling me this saw is pre – 1927 as nibs were discontinued after that on Disston saws. It is a good size saw plate with 6 at the heel. It is perfectly straight saw with sticky sharp teeth. Sharpened with a 15 degree rake and a 20 degree fleam, it is a smooth straight cutter. It has been tested and saws smoothly in mahogany and white oak here at the shop. It cuts fast and straight. You can close your eyes and still cut on the line if you start it correctly. The handle on a No. 12 saw is usually made of apple wood. On this and a very few other saws, Disston used mahogany wood during the 1920s. As mentioned on The Disstonian Institute , a well-respected reference website on Disston saws, discussing another saw shown, – – – The blade is without a nib and the handle is mahogany. It dates from the 1920’s and is a full 26 inches in length. A few of these have turned up, but not many. 12 model not only for the size but also the handle material. The handle is small but very comfortable with a 3 finger grip with the pointer finger along-side pointing forward, as in any handsaw grip. It has a fine balanced hang and is comfortable when using. It has good horns and deep vine carvings with no repairs. There are a lot of good saws but this Disston No. 12 saw is one of the best user quality saws. What made the No. 12 saw more expensive and higher in quality was the work that went into it. The blade was subjected to more hammer work than lesser-quality saws to give tension to the steel. The controlled introduction of internal stresses into the cold steel through hammering and subsequent tempering, resulting in a “tensioned” saw blade, creating a blade that is less likely to wander or vibrate unnecessarily in use. An added result of this tensioning is a blade that has a characteristic ringing or “singing” sound when tapped. This saw rings like a bell. Another feature of the No. 12 handsaw is the extra taper in the blade. In order to reduce the amount of set required on the teeth, the No. 12 was ground thinner at the back than other models. Disston claimed the steel was harder in the No. 12 saw, which would enable the saw plate to be ground thinner while still remaining stiff enough stand up to mild abuse. After grinding and hammering, the blade was polished to almost a mirror finish. A saw you will look to in your shop for the finest work. In fact you will go to this saw because of its small size offers control and gives a very smooth finish to the cut. I have recently been listing many of the great hand saws from my personal collection, and will continue to do so. I have collected handsaws for over 30 years and have enjoyed learning the history of this industry.
