An exceptional, large-scale late 18th / early 19th-century hand-forged wing divider attributed to the renowned English toolmaker Peter Stubs (Warrington, established 1773). This large 10.5-inch example features the early stamped initials “P” on one leg and “S” on the other, applied during forge work. Large 18th-century dividers from Stubs of this scale are far scarcer than standard bench-sized tools. Key Details & Dimensions:? Total Length: 10.5 Inches (26.5 cm) from pivot hinge to tips. Maximum Span: Opens up to an impressive 14 Inches (35.5 cm). Construction: Hand-beaten wrought iron with a peened pivot joint, curved quadrant locking wing arc, straight scribe tips, and original thumbscrew. Markings: Distinctly hand-stamped “P” and “S” on the upper legs. Condition Report: Authentic antique condition with a dark, aged patina and light surface weathering consistent with 200+ years of age. The joint holds firm, the wing nut locks down tightly, and the scribing points remain in sound condition. No cracks, major pitting, or modern repairs. This is mainly the Side Axe, such as the Wheel-Wright’s and Cooper’s Axes, and is used for squaring logs or for making railway sleepers, and for squaring structural timbers of all kinds. A heavy Side Axe of handsome appearance, with the top of the blade pointed or flared upwards (rather like the Goose Wing Axe) and the lower part’bearded’, that is, overhanging the socket. In this it resembles the English Coachmaker’s Axe except that there is sometimes insufficient space between the beard’ and the socket for the user’s fingers. The cutting edge size 39 cm, is bevelled on one side only. The long socket has a ridge on one side and is flat on the other, and is sometimes off-set to protect the knuckles.
