This is, hands down, the best-designed hand saw set, and one of the rarest. It is the Disston Star Patent model, and it has numbered cogs stars! That you set, matching top and bottom, with the degree of set (arbitrary scale 1-6). The front, slotted bolt goes up and down to help define the angle at which your saw aligns with the machine. There is a sliding front-to-back depth gauge. It has a spring-loaded piston with a loop on the bottom, to which you attach a wire-or-rod-or-something mechanism to engage your foot, then place your saw in there, gently push down with your foot until the cogs engage the teeth exactly the way you want, make your final alignment and press firmly with your foot to make the set. Both hands free to get the alignment right! This is not a hammer saw set. It is designed to provide more forceful, yet gentle, foot pressure than can be achieved by a pistol grip saw set. However, the mushroom top seems to invite a hammer whack, maybe if the temper in your saw is a bit stiff? There is a guy on Youtube using one of these, hammering the top without using the foot part!
