HUGE WHEELER MADDEN & CLEMSEN No. 25 RIP SAW XLCR. Here is a scarce saw to find in this spectacular condition. It is a huge 28 rip saw model number – 25 – as stamped above etching, freshly sharpened and ready to use. Over 150 years old yet it has a bold logo with XLCR clear. Original brass split nut screws and deep set medallion perfect no buggering of split nuts. In fact the brass has the horizontal scratch marks from the original factory sanding still in original condition on the front hardware. This tells me this handle has never been removed from this saw plate. The beech wood handle has a stunning aged hand worn patina and is free of cracks and is tight to the blade, a little wear shortening of top horn. WHEELER MADDEN & CLEMSEN were well known on the east coast for their quality saws made in Middletown, NY. They were in business from 1860 until 1893. This saw dates from around the 1870 time period. It is a 5ppi pitch as is factory marked on the heel and freshly hand sharpened by me. No machine use – only hand sharpening with a file. First jointed to ensure an even tooth line where all teeth work together to produce a fast aggressive smooth cutting action. Sharpened with a 4 degree rake as was already set up again probably from the Middleton, NY factory, to give a fast aggressive cut. This is a huge saw with 7-3/4 width at the heel. Pretty sure this is about what it came with from the factory. A saw that will tear thru thick hardwoods on a saw horse. Not saying rip sawing by hand is easy, but a saw like this, sharpened to perfection, will make the work much easier. I think you will be amazed to how fast this saw will eat up a cut. A top quality saw of age, size and condition not often seen. But also a real piece of history made over 130 years ago. A saw for you and future generations. I have recently been listing many of the great hand saws from my personal collection, and will continue to do so. I have collected handsaws for over 30 years and have enjoyed learning the history of this industry. I have always worked with hand tools and was fortunate to teach woodworking for 30 years after my six years in the military. It was during this time that I realized the best way to get quality tools for my students was to recondition vintage tools. Those kids knew how to dull a saw and often I had to keep them after school for an hour when I saw them abusing a saw. That way they came to realize what I went thru to get a saw in perfect working order. This consists of jointing the saw to get the tooth line even, shaping and sharpening, re-jointing and re-sharpening, gently setting the teeth to get a smooth sawing action in the kerf, then final sharpening. Finally I lightly hone the edge with a fine stone and hand polish the blade with butchers wax before testing the smoothness of the cut.
